At the end of 2017 I rewrote my Bio as follows:
“A resident of NY, Stephen Mead is an Outsider multi-media artist and writer. Since the 1990s he's been grateful to many editors for publishing his work in print zines and eventually online. He is also grateful to have managed to keep various day jobs for the Health Insurance.”
When working on the “Works Published 2017” page for this site, in addition to trying to do away with broken links I went back to the beginning page and began adding links beneath poems which were also adapted to visual or musical form.
The jpeg image links in particular are a case of light dawning on Marblehead. I have been fascinated by writing and art a good deal of my life. Around 2000 I began seeking publication combining the two in various formats, including, early on, entering text directly on the image. It was at the beginning of 2016, while working on a new series of montages for a different project, that it occurred to me I might be able to obtain greater clarity by uploading/merging PDF files of the text on the art.
This is another aspect of my work which I feel has annoyed many an editor. I know this since they have written back telling me so. Still, since I’m the one doing the work in this literary game of sadomasochism by being able to reject it the editors are really the ones coming out on top, so why kvetch?
I’ve considered publishing these revisited poetry-art hybrids in book form and as broadsides/posters but what I have added here to “Poetry on the Line” are art pieces where the poems have already been published as predominantly print versions. Clicking on the link a separate page comes up where a person can print out the image-text for free.
I would also like to thank Anthony "Uplandpoet" Watkins, Suzanne Robinson and the team from “Better than Starbucks” for nominating my poem “Walk” for “Best of the Net”, a first-time-ever occurrence!
