At the beginning of 2020 I came across roughly five manila envelopes of poems dating back to before 1990. The poems were typed and the envelopes had hand-scribbled labels on them such as "environmental", "political", "evocative" etc. The main revisions I did on this work was to convert it to PDF and then fix line breaks, spelling and punctuation which had gotten scrambled during conversion back to Word. This took about a month and, oddly enough, upon sending them out many began getting accepted. It was a little disconcerting knowing these same words had been rejected by print magazines decades earlier but apparently and sadly, since the themes of so many poems dealt with war, loss and death, they were still not outdated! Then of course the Corona Virus was pretty much global by March so the idea of pursuing publishing and writing, for me personally, was given what seemed like good reason for pause. I mean, what was the point? But, reflecting on history and how other creative types found the will to go on working during their own times of upheaval (global, personal, or both), somehow I found it was okay to do the same while isolating according to CDC guidelines. Really, the purpose of this site and written on the spirit of most everyone is the same message anyways: we were here, we were here, so let us go on giving testimony to our times.
